Jakarta LRT Velodrome-Manggarai Route to Begin Trial Run, Fares Set at Rp8

Jakarta is preparing to test the new Velodrome-Manggarai LRT route before President Prabowo Subianto formally opens it. Until that inauguration, every passenger will pay just Rp8.

Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung said the provincial government had decided to hold the trial run ahead of the official ceremony. The fare will apply to all members of the public during the testing period.

Why Rp8? It is an extension of the spirit of the 17 August celebration, which ultimately led us to decide on Rp8.

The unusual price was chosen deliberately. Pramono said Jakarta had already introduced a special Rp8 fare to mark the 81st anniversary of Indonesia’s independence, and the LRT trial fare would carry that spirit forward. “Why Rp8? It is an extension of the spirit of the 17 August celebration, which ultimately led us to decide on Rp8,” he said.

The governor did not disclose when testing would begin. He said Jakarta had been communicating with the central government about both the trial and the inauguration, but would wait until the date was final before making an announcement. “There has already been communication about when it will take place, but I do not want to announce it until the actual day that will be inaugurated by the President,” he said.
