Jakarta Pedestrian Bridge to be Demolished After Truck Collision; Traffic Diverted

The pedestrian bridge (JPO) on Jalan Kapten Tendean in South Jakarta is slated for demolition after a heavy transport truck collided with it, leaving it severely damaged and nearly collapsing. Officials from the DKI Jakarta Bina Marga agency confirmed the bridge's foundation is compromised, making complete removal necessary.

Our handling from Bina Marga, the first thing we will do is demolish this JPO. Because we see the foundation on this side, the pillar has come loose, we have to remove it. The removal cannot be partial, it must be complete. Because why? Because we don't have a support in the middle.

The demolition process requires the closure of one lane of traffic heading towards Blok M. Authorities are coordinating with police and the Transportation Agency to manage the traffic diversions. The plan is to first remove the bridge's roof due to its proximity to the road, followed by the removal of its main beams.

We will close one lane that goes towards Blok M. We will close it completely. The other side we will close partially, half. Because we still need to close the other side because the structural condition has no pillar in the middle. So we need space, then we will remove it. That's our plan.

The incident occurred early Tuesday morning when the truck, carrying a crane, reportedly failed to account for the height of its load. The crane snagged on the JPO, causing significant structural damage. Traffic management is in effect, with vehicles from various directions being rerouted to ease congestion during the demolition, which is expected to be completed by Tuesday afternoon.
