Jakarta Police seize weapons and Molotov cocktail components ahead of planned protests

Ahead of planned public demonstrations in Jakarta, the Jakarta Metropolitan Police have announced the seizure of a significant cache of items, including 39 sharp weapons, 7 jerrycans of gasoline, and 201 glass bottles equipped with fuses. Authorities suspect these materials were being prepared for the construction of Molotov cocktails.

Kombes Pol Budi Hermanto, Head of Public Relations for the Jakarta Police, detailed the confiscated evidence during a press conference. The items were found during preventive operations conducted by the General Criminal Investigation Directorate and the Cyber Directorate of the Jakarta Police. Hermanto emphasized that carrying such weapons and materials is forbidden during public assemblies, as stipulated by Law No. 9 of 1998 concerning the Freedom of Public Expression.

The evidence before us includes sharp weapons, airsoft guns, medicines, communication devices, materials or items prepared to make Molotov cocktails, including seven jerrycans of gasoline and 201 glass bottles along with fuses.

The police stated that the seizures were made to ensure a safe environment for citizens exercising their right to express their opinions. "We do not want groups who try to participate in the demonstration by bringing the items that are in front of us all," Hermanto said, indicating a desire to prevent potential violence or disruption.

These precautionary measures aim to ensure that the upcoming demonstrations proceed peacefully and without interference from individuals or groups intending to exploit the event for malicious purposes. The police are committed to upholding public order while respecting the right to peaceful assembly.
