Jakarta Riot Suspects Increase to 49

Indonesian police have increased the number of suspects in riots following a protest near the DPR/MPR complex in Senayan, Jakarta, to 49.

Metro Jakarta Police public relations chief Budi Hermanto said 44 of the suspects are adults handled by the general crimes directorate. The other five are children in conflict with the law, whose cases are being handled by units responsible for women, children and child protection.

The suspects came from 322 people detained on Aug. 27. Police said investigators verified and synchronized the latest data before establishing the updated figure. Of the total detained, 273 people have been released after examination and verification.

Budi also clarified the treatment of information about three people found carrying sharp weapons. He said those details described the suspects’ alleged roles in the case, rather than representing three additional suspects. The official figure for the investigation therefore remains 49.

Police had previously identified 45 suspects over alleged property damage and assault, along with three suspects accused of carrying sharp weapons. Investigators also divided those detained into groups that included minors, ordinary rioters, people suspected of damaging public facilities or assaulting others, and those found with sharp weapons.
