Jakarta to Evaluate School Building Construction, Governor Forms Investigation Team

Jakarta's provincial government is establishing an investigation and inventory team to thoroughly evaluate the condition of school buildings across the capital. This move comes after Governor Pramono Anung inspected the severely damaged SDN Kebayoran Lama Selatan 09, which has been in disrepair for two years.

The governor expressed concern that the Education Office, which historically managed school construction and rehabilitation to meet a 20% education sector allocation, lacks the necessary expertise for structural oversight. "In reality, in almost all regions, it's impossible for the Education Office to do it. It's definitely contracted out and so on," Pramono Anung explained during his visit to the school on Friday.

To address this, the new investigation team will delve into the root causes of damage, citing issues with building frameworks potentially mishandled during a 2011 rehabilitation at SDN Kebayoran Lama Selatan 09. Simultaneously, the inventory team will map other schools facing similar risks. Both teams will receive technical assistance from the Department of City Planning and Housing (Citata) and the Department of Public Works (Bina Marga) to ensure proper supervision and assessment.

The findings from the inventory team will serve as the basis for the provincial government's future rehabilitation efforts, aiming to prevent a recurrence of such structural failures and ensure the safety of students and staff.
