Jamaica Allocates $75 Million to Boost School Literacy and Numeracy

Kingston, Jamaica – School leaders across Jamaica are being urged to leverage a significant $75 million allocation from the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information to bolster student literacy and numeracy outcomes. The fund is designed to empower schools to implement innovative, targeted intervention programs aimed at supporting learners who are facing academic challenges.

Senator Marlon Morgan, Parliamentary Secretary in the Ministry, addressed principals and their leadership teams at the Region One Back-to-School Conference. He emphasized that the funding is specifically earmarked for school-based remedial initiatives. "So, if at your school you have devised... a particular remedial literacy or numeracy intervention, you can engage with the ministry, because there's that window that has been made available for support in relation to these activities," he explained.

Senator Morgan highlighted that several institutions have already pioneered successful programs, yielding encouraging results. He encouraged other schools to build upon these successes and continue developing creative approaches to enhance student performance. "So, it's very important for you to dig deep, pull your team together, and reach your respective children by way of devising fit-for-purpose interventions and remedial engagement for them," he stated, underscoring the ministry's commitment to better support these efforts through the allocated funds.

While acknowledging that more resources would always be welcome, Senator Morgan described the $75 million as a crucial step in the right direction. We would have wished that it were $75 billion but it's a step in the right direction, and we do have a window that is available, and I'm imploring you all to seek to tap into that as you go along.
