Jan Frycz’s Final Television Theatre Role to Air on September 7

Jan Frycz’s final role in Television Theatre will be shown on the evening of his funeral. TVP is scheduled to broadcast the premiere of Tadeusz Kabicz’s “King Matt the First” at 8:55 p.m. on September 7, on TVP1 and TVP VOD.

I remember this work as a wonderful and creative meeting, although my main nuisance was the smoke. On one hand, it created atmosphere, but on the other, after several hours on set, we had all had quite enough of it.

Frycz plays the prime minister in the production, based on Janusz Korczak’s well-known book. The actor had repeatedly said that he read the novel avidly as a child and felt a deep attachment to it, which made him accept the role without hesitation.

He remembered the production as “a wonderful and creative meeting,” although he said smoke on the set became a major nuisance after several hours. It created atmosphere, he recalled, but eventually everyone had had enough of it. At the time, he did not know that the project would become one of his last encounters with Television Theatre and one of his final roles overall.

In his view, it should be neither an ordinary television show nor a simple recording of a stage performance, but a meeting point between live theatre and film. That combination, he said, brings literature and cinema together and turns a performance into an intimate experience at home.

The production also carries a message that children should be treated seriously, with respect for their opinions and their right to make mistakes. The character played by Frycz says at one point, “Children cannot rule, they are too stupid.” In private, however, the actor strongly opposed that view and was close to Korczak’s belief that children should be heard and respected. Frycz’s secular funeral will begin at 11 a.m. at the farewell hall in Warsaw’s Powązki Military Cemetery, with burial at the Old Powązki Cemetery at 1 p.m. The obituary asks mourners to donate to the Home for Veteran Polish Stage Artists in Skolimów instead of sending flowers.
