Janeese Lewis George has secured the Democratic primary for mayor of Washington, D.C., positioning herself as a strong opponent to federal intervention in the city's affairs. Her victory on Tuesday sets the stage for a potential confrontation with the Trump administration, which has challenged the capital's limited autonomy.

In a city that overwhelmingly favors Democrats, Lewis George is the frontrunner for the November general election. She is expected to succeed Muriel Bowser, who is stepping down after three terms. Lewis George, alongside Robert White Jr., who won the Democratic primary for the district's delegate to Congress, has pledged a firmer stance against federal actions impacting the city, including the ongoing deployment of the National Guard for crime prevention.

"As mayor, I will work with anyone who makes D.C. safer," Lewis George declared to supporters Tuesday night, adding, "but I will also stand up to Trump." Washington operates with restricted autonomy, with federal leaders maintaining significant oversight of local matters like budget and legislation. President Donald Trump has previously asserted federal control, including temporarily federalizing the city's police force and deploying federal law enforcement.

Trump had previously threatened to place the city under federal control if Lewis George won the primary. Her main opponent, Kenyan McDuffie, conceded the race and congratulated Lewis George, acknowledging the voters' choice for a "different path." Lewis George, a self-described democratic socialist and current D.C. Council member, has vowed to reverse a police chief's order allowing cooperation with Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents.
