Jänschwalde power plant: Brandenburg minister sees attempted sabotage nearby

A double-digit number of explosive devices has been found near Germany’s Jänschwalde power plant, Brandenburg Interior Minister Jan Redmann said, as authorities investigate what the state government called an attempted act of sabotage.

According to Redmann, a propellant was used to carry conductive material into a high-voltage line. The material was intended to trigger a short circuit, and the attempt succeeded twice. Redmann said there were no indications that an explosion had occurred, although police had earlier described the incident as a detonation.

The incident took place at about 7:30 a.m. After the short circuit, Block B at the power plant shut down automatically, the operator confirmed. The site has four blocks, each with a capacity of 500 megawatts, with one serving as a reserve.

Because the other blocks continued operating, the operator said the power supply was not threatened. Redmann said the number of devices found was still increasing and that the area remained under search.
