Japan: Chiba Opens Shelters as Heavy Rain Causes Widespread Flooding

Chiba Prefecture is facing severe disruptions due to intense rainfall, with Chiba City and Funabashi City particularly affected. The downpour has made it impossible for many residents to return home, prompting the Chiba Prefectural Government to open its main and central buildings as temporary shelters. As of 10 p.m., over 200 individuals had sought refuge in these facilities.

The region has been hit by heavy rain, causing widespread flooding in areas like Ichikawa City, where one man was found deceased in a submerged road. Narita Airport is also experiencing significant passenger backlogs, with approximately 6,600 people stranded in terminals due to the suspension of train and bus services. Additionally, about 27,860 households across Chiba are without power as of 3:30 a.m.

Japan's Meteorological Agency and the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism have issued special heavy rain warnings for 22 municipalities in Chiba Prefecture. Authorities are urging residents to take immediate action to save their lives as the weather system continues to impact the region. The unstable atmospheric conditions are affecting areas from northern to western Japan.
