Japan Funds New Bridge in DRC's Sankuru Region

A new reinforced concrete bridge spanning the Lotembo River in the Sankuru territory of the Democratic Republic of Congo has been inaugurated, thanks to funding from Japan. The $352,500 project, realized through the Congo-Japan Counterpart Fund, is designed to significantly ease the movement of people and goods, addressing long-standing difficulties in crossing waterways that have hampered local transportation and trade.

The official opening ceremony in Lumumbaville was graced by the presence of OGAWA Hidetoshi, the Japanese Ambassador to the DRC, and Guylain Nyembo, the Minister of State for Planning. The bridge is situated on a key route connecting Tshumbe, Loteta, Wembonyama, and Lumumbaville, areas previously challenged by difficult river crossings.

Ambassador OGAWA Hidetoshi emphasized the project's contribution to enhancing mobility, improving access to social services, and boosting commercial exchanges. This initiative aligns with Japan's broader cooperation policy focused on infrastructure development and improving living conditions. Previous Japanese-funded projects in Sankuru include a ferry at Manda, a bridge in Lumumbaville, and a hospital in Loto, underscoring a sustained commitment to the region's development.
