Japan Issues Level 4 Flood and Landslide Alerts for Niigata and Yamagata Amid Heavy Rain

Parts of Japan's Niigata and Yamagata prefectures are facing severe weather conditions as heavy rainfall has prompted the issuance of Level 4 disaster alerts, the second-highest on a five-tier scale. Authorities are urgently advising residents in at-risk areas to evacuate and seek safety.

The Niigata Local Meteorological Observatory issued a Level 4 heavy rain warning for Nagaoka City at 8:15 a.m. local time. The warning highlights a high risk of flooding in low-lying areas and potential river overflows, urging citizens to exercise extreme caution. Concurrently, Level 4 landslide warnings were issued for Nagaoka City, Kashiwazaki City, and Kariwa Village, specifically targeting residents in mountainous or cliff-side areas who are instructed to evacuate immediately.

In neighboring Yamagata Prefecture, the town of Kawanishi issued a Level 4 landslide warning. By 8:23 a.m., approximately 2,000 households in the Komatsu, Tamani, and Higashizawa districts received evacuation advisories. The alerts underscore the immediate danger posed by the intense rainfall and the potential for associated natural disasters.
