Japan promises emergency supplies to Nepal after landslides

Japan will send tents and blankets to Nepal after devastating landslides, Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi said following a telephone call with Nepalese Prime Minister Balendra Shah.

Takaichi offered condolences to those affected and said Japan understood Nepal’s difficulties because both countries frequently face disasters. She also asked Shah’s government to make every effort to find five Japanese nationals who remain missing. Shah said Nepal was working fully on the issue.

The emergency supplies will come from Japan’s overseas stockpiles, which are reserved for international assistance, Takaichi said. She stressed that sending them would not reduce supplies held for disaster response inside Japan.

Japan also plans to provide further aid to Nepal through international organizations. The government has begun preparing for the possible dispatch of an international emergency relief team.
