Japan pushes for domestic AI command system for Self-Defense Forces

Japan is moving forward with plans to integrate an indigenous AI-powered command and control system into its Self-Defense Forces. Citing government sources, the Yomiuri Shimbun reported that the Ministry of Defense has begun evaluating AI command systems developed by Japanese firms. This initiative is driven by the increasing reliance on advanced technology in modern warfare and aims to bolster Japan's response capabilities to evolving combat strategies.

The push for domestic AI technology in defense is partly influenced by recent conflicts, particularly the U.S.-Iran war, where advanced technologies played a significant role. Reports indicate that the U.S. military utilized AI in its operations, analyzing vast amounts of data to formulate attack plans. This contrasts with earlier campaigns where such capabilities were less integrated.

While foreign AI systems, such as Palantir Technologies' 'Maven Smart System,' were previously considered, Japan has decided to prioritize domestic development. This decision aligns with the government's policy of 'AI sovereignty,' ensuring that critical defense data and systems are managed internally. The development is expected to be entrusted to Japanese companies, with the AI startup 'Sakana AI' and its 'Sakana Fugu' system being mentioned as a strong possibility.

The government plans to incorporate the introduction of this AI command and control system into its revised security documents later this year, including the National Security Strategy and the National Defense Strategy. This move underscores Japan's commitment to fundamentally strengthening its defense capabilities, a key tenet of its current security policy.
