Japan's Defense Minister Calls US, S.Korea Cooperation 'Critical' Amid Regional Tensions

Japan's Defense Minister has underscored the vital necessity of trilateral cooperation between Japan, the United States, and South Korea for maintaining stability and security in the region. This statement comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and evolving security landscapes.

Bilateral relations between Japan and Russia continue to be strained, particularly over the disputed Kuril Islands, known as the Northern Territories in Japan. The islands were seized by the Soviet Union in 1945. The recent visit by Russian President Vladimir Putin to the islands marked the first time a Russian president had visited since 2010, prompting a strong protest from Japan, which summoned the Russian ambassador.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov accused Tokyo of "crossing the line of decency" regarding the islands. In response to the conflict in Ukraine, Japan has aligned with other G7 nations in imposing sanctions on Russia and providing support to Kyiv. While Japan cannot directly supply lethal military equipment to Ukraine due to its own defense export restrictions, it indirectly aids Ukraine's air defense. This is achieved by exporting domestically produced Patriot interceptor missiles to the United States, thereby helping to replenish U.S. stockpiles depleted by military aid to Ukraine. Analysts suggest Putin's visit to the Kurils may have been intended as a warning to Japan against deepening its support for Ukraine or potentially cooperating more closely with NATO.
