Japan's most repaired car model revealed: It's not prone to breaking down, and the reason may surprise you

Contrary to the assumption that high repair inquiries indicate frequent breakdowns, new data from Japan suggests a different consumer trend. Ikeuchi, a company specializing in auto body repair and painting, released its 2026 first-half repair data, revealing that the Toyota Alphard received the most repair consultations. Other models with significant inquiry volumes include the Toyota Prius, Honda Freed, Nissan Serena, and Toyota Hiace.

The primary driver behind this trend, according to the report, is the rising cost of new vehicles coupled with general inflation. This economic pressure has led Japanese households to reconsider frequent car replacements. Instead, consumers are increasingly opting to properly maintain their current vehicles to extend their lifespan, shifting away from the pursuit of the latest models.

Ikeuchi emphasized that this ranking is based on consultations received at its 34 branches, totaling 32,476 inquiries, and does not represent overall Japanese vehicle ownership or the entire repair market. Therefore, it should not be interpreted as a definitive list of the most frequently repaired cars in Japan. However, the data does offer insights into changing consumer habits, illustrating a growing preference among Japanese drivers to "choose to repair and continue using the car long-term."

The report notes that the number of repair consultations increased by approximately 1.9 times compared to the same period last year. This growth is partly attributed to Ikeuchi's expansion and increased capacity. Nevertheless, the underlying trend of repairing rather than replacing vehicles is becoming more pronounced. Factors such as advanced safety systems and electrification in newer models further inflate prices, alongside inflation and interest rate changes, making car ownership more burdensome. Consequently, models like vans and compact cars, often used for daily commutes and family errands, experience frequent minor damage from parking or narrow streets, contributing to their higher repair inquiry numbers.
