Japanese Wolfdog Captured After 18-Hour Escape

A tense situation unfolded in Saga Prefecture, Japan, when a wolfdog, a hybrid of wolf and dog, escaped its owner during a walk and remained at large for nearly 18 hours. The incident, which occurred on the evening of April 20th, prompted a swift response from local authorities, including the police and relevant agencies, who launched a search operation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported during the dog's brief period of freedom or its eventual recapture.

The wolfdog, described as a female measuring about 60cm in length and weighing around 25kg, was eventually apprehended in the same area by a company contracted by the Saga Prefectural Center for Public Health and Welfare. Authorities believe the escape happened due to the owner's failure to properly secure the leash. This incident is particularly concerning as it was not the first time the animal had escaped; it had a previous escape from its home in March. This history of escape raises questions about the owner's ability to manage such an animal.

In response to the escape, the Saga City Board of Education requested local elementary and middle schools to strengthen safety measures for students on April 21st. The health authorities also provided guidance to the owner on preventing recurrence. This event brings to mind the recent widely publicized incident in South Korea involving a wolf named 'Neukgu' that escaped from Daejeon O-World, highlighting a recurring issue of escaped animals causing public concern. The authorities have reiterated the importance of regularly checking the condition of leashes and lead ropes during walks. The Saga Prefecture has previously classified certain breeds, like the Kishu dog involved in a separate incident in March, as 'specific dogs' with potential to harm people, underscoring the need for stringent pet management.
