Jason Joseph crowned European champion in 110m hurdles

Swiss sprinter Jason Joseph claimed the men's 110-meter hurdles title at the European Athletics Championships in Birmingham, solidifying his status as the continent's top hurdler. Joseph, 27, delivered a flawless performance in the final, clocking a season's best of 13.12 seconds. He edged out France's Just Kwaou-Mathey, who took silver with 13.16 seconds, while Poland's Jakub Szymanski secured the bronze medal with a time of 13.26 seconds.

The final notably lacked some of Joseph's key rivals from recent seasons. Spain's Quique Llopis, the silver medalist from the 2024 European Championships in Rome, was eliminated in the semifinals. His compatriot Asier Martínez, the reigning champion from Munich 2022, also failed to advance to the final.

In other track and field events, Finland's Silja Kosonen dominated the women's hammer throw, winning gold with a mark of 76.28 meters. Italy's Sara Fantini earned silver, and Beatrice Nedberge Llano of Norway took bronze. On the track, British athlete Mathew Hudson-Smith captured his third European gold medal in the men's 400 meters, finishing in 44.17 seconds. France's Muhammad Abdallah Kounta and the Netherlands' Jonas Phijffers claimed silver and bronze, respectively.

The women's 400-meter hurdles saw a commanding victory from Slovenia's Emma Zapletalova, who crossed the finish line in 52.91 seconds. Britain's Emily Newnham took silver, and Portugal's Fatoumata Binta Diallo secured the bronze. The men's triple jump qualifying round was led by Portuguese athletes Pedro Pichardo and Andy Díaz, both of Cuban origin, who recorded marks of 17.16 meters and 17.05 meters, respectively.
