Jay Chou Recruited Patrick Hsu at 12, but the Young Singer Sent Him to a Gas Station for the Bathroom

Jay Chou once arrived at Patrick Hsu’s home in Tamsui to discuss signing him, only to be sent to a gas station when he asked to use the bathroom.

Hsu shared the story on the latest episode of host Patrick’s podcast “Listen When You Have Time.” He said Chou had watched his videos and thought he performed well, then visited in person when Hsu was 12 to ask whether he wanted to come to the company to talk about working together.

After about 10 minutes of conversation, Chou asked whether the home had a bathroom. Hsu said he and his mother felt the house was too messy to let the star use it, so they politely told him, “There’s a gas station up ahead.” The answer made the host laugh. Hsu joked that Chou might have noticed this very trait when choosing him.

Hsu remembered Chou’s arrival as “a whole convoy,” with the singer riding a Harley-Davidson motorcycle and other vehicles traveling before and behind him. He also recalled another outing in which Chou walked with the group from Taipei’s Zhongshan District through Wanhua and Zhongzheng.

The walk lasted more than three hours. Hsu wore heavy boots, while Chou arrived in a full tracksuit and sneakers, which immediately made Hsu worry about the day ahead. Chou shopped quickly and appeared unconcerned about prices. Once his hands were full, he called for a van, but only to place the purchases inside before continuing to walk around. Hsu said he generally liked walking, but his shoes were not suited to such a long trip.
