Jean André Pumarol handed over to authorities amid judicial proceedings

Jean André Pumarol was delivered to authorities on Thursday, complying with a court order that revoked a previous decision and imposed three months of preventive detention. The charges stem from the 2025 death of Yolanda Handal Abugabir and the injury of at least five other individuals.

Pumarol's family stated that he had been receiving specialized medical attention at a private health center since the initial ruling in his favor. This decision was appealed by the victim's family.

According to investigations, Pumarol attacked several people on July 23, 2025, at a condominium in the Naco sector of the National District. The deceased, Handal Abugabir, 70, was attacked after opening her apartment door. Pumarol's father and the victim's domestic worker were among those injured.

Pumarol's lawyer, Richard Martínez, urged adherence to the rule of law and respect for judicial independence. He also requested that government officials refrain from making statements that could be perceived as interference in the ongoing judicial process. The Public Ministry confirmed Pumarol's arrest, and he has been ordered to serve his pre-trial detention at the Anamuya Correctional and Rehabilitation Center in Higüey.
