Jenes River in Solo Equipped with Trash Containment Net

The city of Solo, Indonesia, has initiated a collaborative program called "Sungai Lestari" (Sustainable River) aimed at significantly improving the management of waste in its waterways. This joint effort involves the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the organization Clean Rivers, marking a concerted push towards cleaner urban rivers.

A key component of the program is the installation of a "trash boom," a floating barrier designed to intercept waste flowing from upstream sections of the Jenes River. This captured refuse will not simply be removed; instead, it will be meticulously sorted and processed by local partners. This approach ensures that the collected waste is given value, thereby reducing the volume of trash destined for the Putri Cempo Final Disposal Site (TPA).

The "Sungai Lestari" program is designed with multiple objectives. Primarily, it seeks to maintain and enhance the water quality of Solo's rivers. Concurrently, it aims to raise public awareness regarding effective waste management practices among the community. Ultimately, the initiative contributes to the broader goal of fostering a cleaner and more sustainable urban ecosystem within Solo.
