Jessica Oji Wins Historic World U20 Athletics Championships Shot Put Gold

Nineteen-year-old Jessica Oji has etched her name in Nigerian sporting history, becoming the first athlete from the country to clinch a world title in a field event. Oji achieved this remarkable feat at the World Athletics U20 Championships in Eugene, Oregon, United States, by winning the women's shot put gold medal with an impressive throw of 18.08 meters.

Her victory marks a significant milestone, especially considering her recent switch of allegiance from the United States to Nigeria in February. This historic win follows closely on the heels of another major achievement: a silver medal at the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, just a week before her U20 triumph. Oji celebrated her 19th birthday at the Team Nigeria training camp in Aberdeen, demonstrating her dedication and focus.

Oji's performance in Eugene left no doubt about her dominance. She opened her campaign with a throw of 18.05 meters, then improved to her winning mark of 18.08 meters. Subsequent throws of 17.95 meters and 18.07 meters were also sufficient to secure the gold, comfortably ahead of Ecuador's Belsy Jenniffer Quiñonez, who took silver with 17.90 meters, and Germany's Emily Scherf, who earned bronze with 17.23 meters.

This breakthrough achievement provides a significant boost for Nigerian athletics, particularly in throwing disciplines. Prior to Oji's success, Nigeria's best performances at the U20 Championships were Esther Aghatise's silver in the long jump in 2002 and Chinecherem Nnamdi's bronze in the javelin in 2021. Oji's ability to surpass the 18-meter mark as a junior athlete signals a promising future and offers hope for Nigeria to cultivate a world-class shot put star.
