Jetstar to charge for carry-on bags in overhead lockers

Jetstar, the budget subsidiary of Australia's Qantas, is set to introduce a new cabin baggage policy in February that will require passengers to pay extra for carry-on bags stored in overhead lockers. This move aligns the airline with a growing number of low-cost carriers globally that charge for overhead space.

Under the revised policy, travelers will be permitted one smaller item, such as a backpack, handbag, or laptop bag, that fits under the seat at no additional cost. However, larger bags intended for overhead compartments will incur a fee ranging from A$25 to A$52 per flight, depending on the specific route. Passengers seeking to bring a larger bag and gain early boarding access can opt for "Priority Carry-on."

Jetstar CEO Stephanie Tully explained that the overhaul followed extensive customer and crew research, identifying bag weigh-ins at the gate and competition for overhead space as significant sources of stress during air travel. She stated that the new model is designed to enhance on-time departure performance by simplifying the boarding process and optimizing the use of overhead lockers.

"You only pay for what you need, travelling with less means paying less, and you can always add more if you need," Tully said in a statement, emphasizing the airline's low-fares philosophy. Despite the airline's rationale, consumer groups have voiced criticism, arguing that advertised base fares may not always reflect the total cost of travel when such additional fees are considered.
