Chinese media reports, citing sources, suggest that Ye Jianchun's downfall is linked to his family's alleged involvement in the rare earth business after he took office. Hong Kong's Ming Pao newspaper, referencing reports from mainland Chinese media outlet Economic Observer, stated that personnel from the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection and the National Supervisory Commission took Ye Jianchun into custody on the evening of the 25th in Ruijin City, Ganzhou, Jiangxi. Reports also indicated that Ye Jianchun's wife was taken away around the same time, though these reports were subsequently deleted.

Jiangxi province is known to be one of China's largest repositories of rare earth elements, holding approximately two-thirds of the country's reserves of strategically important heavy rare earths. The headquarters of China Rare Earth Group, a central state-owned enterprise, is located in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi.
