Jigawa Digitises Revenue Collection, Targets Leakage

The Jigawa State Government in Nigeria has launched a comprehensive digitization of its revenue collection processes, targeting livestock and grain markets, haulage operations, and other informal sector activities. This major initiative, a collaboration between eTranzact International Plc and the Jigawa Internal Revenue Service (JIRS), aims to eliminate manual collection methods and curb revenue leakages. By replacing traditional practices with an electronic system, the state expects to enhance accountability and significantly boost its internally generated revenue. The new digital platform provides real-time transaction tracking and ensures direct remittance of funds into government accounts. Officials highlighted that this modernization is crucial as governments nationwide seek to improve domestic revenue mobilization amidst increasing demands for public services. The system will utilize various electronic channels, including mobile wallets and Point-of-Sale (POS) terminals, for seamless and transparent transactions. Mr. Gabriel Essien, Deputy General Manager at eTranzact International, stated that the platform offers real-time visibility into collections and generates reliable data for government planning. He emphasized the company's mission to provide secure digital payment infrastructure that promotes transparency and efficiency. The platform was developed after extensive stakeholder engagement to address the specific challenges of informal sector revenue collection, promising simplified administration and strengthened accountability.
