Johansen wins Volta a Portugal prologue; UAE Team Emirates dominates

The Volta a Portugal kicked off with a prologue time trial where Denmark's Julius Johansen of UAE Team Emirates emerged victorious. Johansen set the fastest time of seven minutes and 12 seconds over the 6.5-kilometer course in Lisbon, earning him the distinction of being the first rider to don the leader's yellow jersey in the 87th edition of the race.

Johansen's team, UAE Team Emirates, showcased its strength by securing three positions within the top ten finishers. Rui Oliveira, a teammate of Johansen's, finished second, just four seconds behind, followed by Rafael Reis of Anicolor/Campicarn in third place, seven seconds adrift. Luca Giaimi's fourth-place finish further solidified UAE Team Emirates' lead in the team classification, as they are the sole "WorldTeam" participating in the event.

The opening stage also proved positive for Euskaltel-Euskadi, one of the two Spanish teams competing. Axel van der Tuuk and Txomin Juaristi secured sixth and seventh places, respectively, placing two riders within the top ten. Meanwhile, the reigning champion of the Volta a Portugal, Russia's Artem Nych from Anicolor/Campicarn, began his title defense with a solid fifth-place finish.

The race is set to continue its journey through the Lisbon metropolitan area, moving to Sintra for its first official stage. This upcoming stage will cover a distance of 157.1 kilometers, connecting the towns of Lourinhã and Queluz.
