John Fashanu serves Vivian with divorce papers as family dispute takes new turn

John Fashanu has served divorce papers on his wife, Vivian, only weeks after publicly announcing that their marriage had broken down. The former England footballer’s management team said proceedings were already underway.

The move comes amid a family dispute involving Fashanu, Vivian and his eldest daughter, Amal. The disagreement has also touched on Fashanu’s business affairs and a disputed property in Abuja.

Fashanu said he decided to end the marriage because it was no longer working. He accused Vivian of becoming increasingly involved in his business affairs, saying this contributed to the deterioration of his relationship with Amal. “I was not manipulated to do anything. I am totally fit and well, and know what I want. I think it is time for a divorce because this marriage is not working, and my wife has been getting too involved in my business affairs and sowing discord between my daughter and me,” he said.

He added that his earlier apology to Amal concerned the extent of his public attack on her, not an admission that the contents of a Daily Mail article were accurate. Fashanu has consistently rejected concerns about his health and decision-making.

Vivian is Fashanu’s third wife, and they have been married for about three years. When the dispute emerged in May, Fashanu publicly defended her and said he loved her “dearly.” In August, he apologized to Amal and announced on social media that he intended to divorce Vivian. His management team described the dispute as complicated and said Amal became concerned after visiting Nigeria and noticing that her father had lost significant weight.
