John Reimberg discusses reclaiming Quito's Historic Center

Ecuador's Interior Minister John Reimberg unveiled a comprehensive security plan aimed at reclaiming public spaces in Quito, with a particular focus on the historic center and La Mariscal district. The "Plan Protección para Quito" seeks to restore tranquility and safety for residents and visitors alike.

"The historic center is fundamental to the city, and many people feel afraid to go there," Reimberg stated, emphasizing the need for a visible police presence. The plan mandates 24-hour patrols by police and military personnel in prioritized sectors. This initiative goes beyond vehicle checks, focusing on ensuring citizens feel secure walking, using public transport, and accessing essential services like banks and educational institutions.

Reimberg announced that 2,000 additional police officers will be deployed to Quito, augmenting the existing force of 6,658 officers. This reinforcement aims to establish a noticeable police presence throughout the city, not just at checkpoints. The minister highlighted recent successes attributed to the plan since its August 3 launch, including operations against micro-trafficking, arrests for weapons possession and extortion, and the seizure of approximately 100 kilograms of marijuana.

Integration of surveillance camera systems with police operations is a key component, with Reimberg noting that control over 600 cameras has already yielded positive results. He also took the opportunity to criticize the municipal government's security management, particularly in areas like the historic center and La Mariscal, suggesting a lack of adequate action.

The overarching goal is to create an environment where citizens can move freely and safely, thereby revitalizing tourist areas and improving the quality of life for Quito's residents. The plan addresses various forms of crime, including micro-trafficking and extortion, with the aim of fostering a greater sense of security across the capital.
