Johnson & Johnson faces $5.5bn in cancer case payouts amid ongoing lawsuits

Johnson & Johnson is grappling with more than 70,000 lawsuits claiming its iconic baby powder and other talc-based products caused cancer. The allegations, which date back to 2009, center on claims that the talc caused ovarian cancer or mesothelioma, a rare cancer typically linked to asbestos exposure. Plaintiffs allege that Johnson & Johnson's talc products were contaminated with asbestos, a mineral often found near talc deposits.

The company has consistently denied these claims, labeling them "without merit" and based on "junk science." While Johnson & Johnson reformulated its baby powder and eventually stopped using talc altogether, replacing it with corn starch, it maintained that talc was safe and the reformulation was a response to declining sales driven by online misinformation. Despite winning the "overwhelming majority" of ovarian cancer cases that have gone to trial, the company has faced significant payouts in cases it has lost or settled.
