Joint forces clear water hyacinths from Indonesia's Saguling Reservoir

A concerted effort is underway to tackle the extensive water hyacinth overgrowth plaguing the Saguling Reservoir in West Bandung, West Java. Personnel from PLN Indonesia Power UBP Saguling, the Indonesian military, local authorities, and volunteers are collaborating to clear the invasive plants, employing heavy machinery to expedite the process over several days.

The operation is a direct response to community reports of increased mosquito populations, which are breeding in the dense mats of water hyacinth. Senior Manager of PLN Indonesia Power UBP Saguling, Doni Bakar, stated that the cleanup is part of PLN's commitment to environmental preservation and ensuring the comfort of residents near the power plant's operational area. "The presence of accumulated water hyacinths can be a contributing factor to mosquito proliferation, necessitating swift and collaborative action," Bakar noted.

Beyond public health concerns, the water hyacinth accumulation poses a risk to the operational efficiency of the Saguling Hydroelectric Power Plant. This plant is crucial for supporting peak load demand and regulating frequency across the Java-Bali power system. By clearing the reservoir, PLN Indonesia Power UBP Saguling and its stakeholders aim to provide a tangible solution to community grievances, demonstrating a shared concern for environmental health, resident comfort, and ecosystem sustainability.
