Joint Investigation Team Searches Election Commission Over Spouse Travel Embezzlement Allegations

South Korea's joint investigation team has launched a forced search and seizure operation at the National Election Commission (NEC) headquarters. The probe is focused on allegations of embezzlement linked to overseas trips taken by the spouse of former NEC Chairman Noh Tae-ak and other NEC officials.

The investigation stems from a complaint filed by the People Power Party's Media Special Committee. The complaint accuses Noh and unnamed NEC officials of embezzlement. According to the complaint, NEC officials allegedly made an official overseas trip to the Maldives from September 6-14, 2023, purportedly to observe the presidential election there. This trip reportedly incurred expenses of approximately 14.7 million won (about $10,000 USD) for flights, accommodation, and meals.

Furthermore, the accusers claim that Noh Tae-ak, during his tenure, took overseas trips, including one to Denmark, with his spouse. They allege that these trips were not properly documented in official reports, leading to the misappropriation of around 90.53 million won (about $65,000 USD) in public funds.

The joint investigation team confirmed the ongoing search operation on the morning of July 20. The operation aims to gather evidence related to these serious allegations of financial misconduct within the election commission.
