Jon Cypher, Actor from 'Hill Street Blues' and 'Masters of the Universe,' Dies at 94

Jon Cypher, a versatile actor recognized for his commanding presence on television and in film, has passed away at the age of 94. His family confirmed his death on August 3rd at his home in Central Point, Oregon.

Cypher left a significant mark on television, most notably as Police Chief Fletcher Daniels throughout the seven-season run of the acclaimed drama "Hill Street Blues." He also demonstrated his comedic timing as Brigadier General Marcus Craig in the CBS sitcom "Major Dad" for its final three seasons.

His extensive filmography includes playing the heroic Man-at-Arms in the 1987 film "Masters of the Universe" and a villainous rancher in "Valdez Is Coming." Early in his career, Cypher gained widespread recognition for his role as the Prince opposite Julie Andrews in the 1957 live television production of Rodgers & Hammerstein's "Cinderella," which captivated over 107 million viewers.

Cypher's career extended to the stage, with notable Broadway appearances including originating the role of Don Quixote in "Man of La Mancha" and understudying Patrick O'Neal in "The Night of the Iguana." He also had recurring roles in the CBS dramas "Knots Landing" and "Dynasty."
