Jon Favreau debuts as documentarian telling the story of a real 'Lion King'

Director Jon Favreau, known for his live-action adaptation of 'The Lion King,' ventures into documentary filmmaking with National Geographic's 'Lion.' The series, which premiered this week after four years of filming, tells the true story of Kio, a lion cub, and his pride. 'Lion' marks the first audiovisual project to document a lion cub's complete journey to adulthood. Executive produced by Favreau and wildlife filmmaker Mike Gunton, the series follows Kio's transformation from a vulnerable young cub to a powerful leader. The narrative combines cinematic storytelling with revolutionary filming techniques and features music by Oscar winner Hans Zimmer, who also scored 'The Lion King.' Favreau explained that his experience with 'The Lion King' and 'The Jungle Book,' coupled with a deep fascination for the natural world, inspired him to take on this documentary challenge. He noted the unique nature of the project, where 'nature dictates the course of the story,' contrasting it with his previous work that relied on scripts and visual effects. Favreau highlighted the crucial roles of music and editing in shaping the narrative once the footage was captured. Gunton, executive producer for BBC's Natural History Unit, emphasized the team's need to be highly attuned to unfolding events, as the story's direction was not predetermined. The filmmakers observed that one of the elder lionesses was having what might be her last cub, a potential legacy-bearer, drawing parallels to Simba's journey in 'The Lion King.' The series began filming Kio at around four to five weeks old, and his story ultimately became the central focus.
