Joso Bužan Exhibition Opens September 4 at Ethnographic Museum

An exhibition dedicated to the artist Joso Bužan will open on September 4, 2026, at the Ethnographic Museum in Croatia. Titled "Joso Bužan: from the collections of the National Museum of Modern Art and the Ethnographic Museum," the show highlights the work of an artist known for depicting Croatian daily life at the turn of the 20th century.

Bužan's oeuvre, rooted in village life, landscapes, and bourgeois portraits, particularly captured scenes from continental Croatia, including the Zagreb surroundings, Posavina, and the lives of the Roma people. His paintings, characterized by a light palette and a specific pseudo-plein air technique, blend academic realism with anecdote, humor, and narrative.

Beneath the surface of cheerful depictions of rural idylls, keen observers and art critics can discern subtle hints of expressionist and symbolic unease. Beyond village scenes, the exhibition also features his notable portraits of prominent public figures of the era. The exhibition is open to the public from September 4 to October 18, 2026.
