Journalist Injured in Diyarbakır Shooting; Association Condemns Rising Violence

A journalist was injured in a targeted shooting incident in Diyarbakır, Turkey, sparking outrage and renewed calls for action against escalating violence and the proliferation of illegal firearms. Mürsel Acay, a journalist, was present as a customer in a restaurant when unidentified assailants opened fire, injuring him and two others.

This incident is not just about a fellow journalist being injured. It is a bitter indication that everyone's safety is under threat in Diyarbakır and many cities in our country. Enough is enough. Every day, guns speak on a street. Organized crime groups and gangs are hijacking the peace of our cities. Unlicensed and uncontrolled individual armament is turning into a growing social threat every day.

The Southeastern Journalists Association issued a strong statement condemning the attack and pointing to the broader societal threat posed by organized crime and unchecked individual gun ownership. The association emphasized that the incident involving Acay is not isolated but a grim illustration of the pervasive insecurity affecting citizens in Diyarbakır and across Turkey. They highlighted that weapons are frequently used in public spaces, endangering innocent civilians, including children, women, and workers.

Guns no longer target specific individuals; they strike children, women, journalists, workers, health professionals, shopkeepers, and innocent people who have committed no crime.

"This incident is not just about a fellow journalist being injured," the association stated. Personal safety is the most fundamental human right. Therefore, we will not remain silent. As the Southeastern Journalists Association, we call on the people of Diyarbakır, all democratic mass organizations, professional chambers, unions, non-governmental organizations, political parties, local administrators, and everyone with a conscience to become one voice.

The association urged for immediate and decisive measures, including stricter legal regulations against unlicensed and uncontrolled firearms, and a resolute fight against criminal organizations that instill fear. They called upon the public, democratic organizations, professional chambers, unions, political parties, and local administrators to unite and demand action. The statement stressed that ensuring personal safety is a fundamental human right and that the issue transcends the journalistic community, impacting the right to life for all residents.

Our demands are clear: deterrent and effective legal regulations against unlicensed and uncontrolled individual armament must be implemented. An uncompromising and effective struggle must be waged against organized crime groups and gangs that drag cities into a climate of fear. Inspections must be increased to prevent the trade of unlicensed weapons, and legal processes must be carried out with determination.
