Journalist Küçükkaya: 'I believed Cemil Tugay would join the AKP'

İzmir Metropolitan Mayor Cemil Tugay is at the center of speculation about joining the Justice and Development Party (AKP), with reports suggesting his transfer could occur on August 14. This potential move follows his resignation from the Republican People's Party (CHP) after a decision of 'absolute nullity'.

If Tugay officially joins the AKP, it would mark the first time the İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has been led by the AKP. The reports, particularly from pro-government newspaper Yeni Şafak, have fueled discussions about a significant political shift in one of Turkey's major cities.

President Erdoğan, at his party's Sapanca camp, sounded out the İzmir deputies asking, 'What do you think, shall we take Cemil Tugay?' After learning this and then confirming it, I believed that Mayor Tugay would join the AKP.

Adding to the intrigue, journalist İsmail Küçükkaya shared a behind-the-scenes account on social media. He claimed that President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan had gauged the interest of İzmir lawmakers regarding Tugay's potential inclusion in the AKP. Küçükkaya stated that after learning and confirming this information, he became convinced Tugay would switch parties.

Despite the swirling rumors, Cemil Tugay has largely avoided direct comments on the alleged transfer. However, during a recent gathering with İZBETON workers, he emphasized his deep commitment to Turkey and İzmir. He declared, "I will never betray this country. I will fight against anyone who engages in such betrayal." Tugay also stressed the importance of public trust and solidarity, vowing to ensure the municipality operates effectively and ethically for the benefit of its citizens.
