JPJ Deploys Drones Extensively for Op Aidiladha Road Safety

The Malaysian Road Transport Department (JPJ) is stepping up its efforts to ensure road safety during the upcoming Aidiladha festive period with a comprehensive operation, codenamed Op Aidiladha 2026 (HRAA 2026). This year's operation will see an intensified deployment of technology, particularly drones, to monitor and enforce traffic laws across the country. The focus will be on critical accident hotspots and major highway routes, areas known for frequent violations and potential dangers.

The use of drones will be enhanced more comprehensively than during the first operation last Aidilfitri season.

Datuk Jazmanie Shafawi, JPJ's Deputy Director-General (Planning and Operations), highlighted that the use of drones will be significantly more comprehensive compared to previous operations. With a fleet of six drones, JPJ intends to maximize their utility in identifying and penalizing common traffic offenses. These include serious violations such as overtaking on double lines, misusing emergency lanes, using mobile phones while driving, and carrying dangerous loads. The strategic deployment of these aerial surveillance tools is expected to deter errant drivers and improve overall compliance with traffic regulations.

Beyond drones, the HRAA 2026 operation will integrate other advanced surveillance technologies, including Action Cameras (EAC) and body cameras worn by enforcement officers. A total of approximately 2,500 JPJ officers and personnel will be involved nationwide, working in conjunction with monitoring efforts at 288 identified accident hotspots. This multi-faceted approach underscores JPJ's commitment to leveraging technology for more effective law enforcement and accident prevention.

JPJ's proactive stance is informed by past experiences, such as the issuance of 5,000 investigation notices during the previous Aidilfitri operation based on drone surveillance. The department emphasizes that strict action will be taken against all road users who violate traffic laws. Motorcyclists, in particular, will be a focus to reduce accident risks. JPJ urges all road users to prioritize safety, adhere to the law, and ensure their vehicles are in good condition before embarking on their journeys, especially during the return-to-hometown travel season.
