Juan Fernando Quintero terminates contract, leaves River Plate

Juan Fernando Quintero has officially parted ways with River Plate, agreeing to terminate his contract with the Argentine club. The Colombian midfielder cited a desire for more consistent playing time as the reason for his departure.

Quintero, 33, rejoined River Plate in mid-2025 from América de Cali, a move driven by then-coach Marcelo Gallardo's request. However, following Gallardo's exit and the arrival of Eduardo 'Chacho' Coudet, Quintero's role in the starting lineup diminished.

This past week, Quintero expressed his situation, stating, "I have nothing against 'el Chacho,' I wish him the best. I, after the last semester with him, am looking for the best situation for me and for the club." He added, "I hope everything ends well. I love the club, I respect it, I love the people. I always said I wanted to retire at the club that I love, that changed my life, that enhanced my abilities. But these are situations I cannot control."

During his most recent year at the club, Quintero participated in 40 matches, contributing five goals and seven assists. This marks the end of his third period with River Plate, having previously played for them between 2017-2020 and 2021-2022, accumulating 97 appearances and 19 goals across those stints. His departure coincides with River Plate's confirmation of signing Ángel Correa and Nicolás Otamendi.
