Judge orders pre-trial detention for widow of murdered Mexican mayor

A control judge has ordered pre-trial detention for Marisol 'N', the widow of Valentín Lavín Romero, the mayor of Temoac in central Mexico who was assassinated last week. The Morelos state Attorney General's Office announced the decision, stating that the Prosecutor's Office for High-Impact Crimes (FIDAI) presented Marisol 'N' and another municipal official, Geovany Emmanuel 'N', before the court.

According to the prosecution, FIDAI presented evidence to the court indicating that both municipal officials allegedly participated in extortion activities from July 2025. They are accused of physically assaulting and threatening victims to coerce them into paying large sums of money to avoid harm. The initial hearing took place in Cuautla, where the charges were formally laid against Geovany Emmanuel 'N' and the mayor's widow.

As of now, the state prosecutor's office has not indicated any connection between the mayor's murder and the charges of extortion against his widow. However, the investigation into Mayor Lavín Romero's death is ongoing. Last week, Mexico's Secretary of Public Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch, stated that the mayor was under investigation for alleged ties to criminal groups, specifically the Aparicio and Huazulco organizations.

García Harfuch highlighted that these criminal groups are linked to serious crimes such as kidnapping, extortion, drug trafficking, and homicide in the eastern region of Morelos. The investigation is also examining the potential involvement of the mayor's mother-in-law, Andrea 'N', known as 'La Patrona,' who previously served as municipal treasurer and is believed to be an operator for one of these structures. The mayor's father-in-law has also been detained.
