Judge Provisionally Halts Yucatán Tourism Project Amid Rights Violation Claims

A federal judge has granted a provisional suspension of the "Las Dunas" tourism project in Chuburná Puerto, Yucatán, responding to a lawsuit filed by local residents and environmental organizations. This marks the second suspension for the project, following an earlier one issued by the Federal Attorney for Environmental Protection (Profepa).

Kanan Human Rights and Salvemos Las Dunas de Chuburná argued that the Progreso municipality failed to ensure public participation mechanisms with residents before approving construction and land use permits for the real estate development. The groups stated that the judge's ruling orders the cessation of construction licenses and land use permits, halting any work that could harm the environment.

The court also mandated that the municipal authority of Progreso initiate a public consultation process regarding the project. This new suspension stems from an amparo lawsuit alleging violations of environmental human rights and the improper authorization by state and federal environmental authorities.

In addition to halting the project, the ruling requires an immediate payment of a 50,000 peso monetary guarantee to the courts. The environmental collectives are urging residents of Yucatán to support the defense of the Chuburná dunes and contribute to fundraising efforts for legal expenses.
