Judge signs release warrant for Sedina Tamakloe Attionu following A-G's withdrawal of motion blocking release

A judge has signed a release warrant for Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, the former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), following the Attorney-General's withdrawal of a motion that sought to block her release. The Attorney-General had initially filed a notice of appeal at the Supreme Court after the Court of Appeal quashed Attionu's conviction and 10-year sentence on 78 corruption-related charges in July 2026.

The Court of Appeal panel, led by Justice Emmanuel Ankamah, ruled that the trial judge had improperly shifted the burden of proof onto the appellant, violating the constitutional presumption of innocence. The court also found that the prosecution had failed to prove several charges beyond a reasonable doubt.

Shortly after the acquittal, the Office of the Attorney-General and Ministry of Justice expressed dissatisfaction and filed an appeal. They also submitted a motion for a stay of execution pending the appeal, asking the Court of Appeal to halt the judgment until the Supreme Court made its determination. However, Principal State Attorney Hilda Craig withdrew this motion on Wednesday morning.

The prosecution has since filed a motion at the Supreme Court, and the previous motion at the Court of Appeal was struck out as withdrawn. This sequence of events paves the way for Attionu's release.
