Judges, lawyers take legal education to Makola market

Judges and lawyers stepped out of the courtroom and into Makola Market, a bustling hub in Accra, to mark the Supreme Court's 150th anniversary. This initiative, a first of its kind, saw members of the Bench and the Bar jointly engaging directly with the public on legal matters.

The primary goal was to bridge the gap between the judiciary and ordinary citizens, dispelling the notion that legal professionals are distant and unapproachable. Traders at the market seized the rare opportunity to interact with Supreme Court judges and lawyers, raising questions about spousal rights, marriage, and child custody.

To ensure accessibility, discussions were conducted in multiple languages, including English, Twi, Ga, and Ewe. Justice Afia Serwaa Asare-Botwe, a Justice of the Court of Appeal, reassured the traders that everyone possesses legal rights protected by the state. She emphasized that the courts are established to deliver justice to all, irrespective of their social or economic standing, and encouraged the public to respect the law while seeking legal recourse when necessary.

The anniversary celebrations also included a procession through Accra's principal streets, culminating at the Ghana School of Law. Justices Antony Henry Kwofie and Kweku Ackaah-Boafo, along with High Court judge Justice Marrie Louise, participated in the event. Justice Kwofie deemed the outreach exercise valuable and also highlighted the importance of regular physical exercise for maintaining good health among his colleagues.
