At the National Conference of the National Association of Judiciary Correspondents in Abuja, Nigeria's top legal officials, Chief Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun and Attorney General Lateef Fagbemi, delivered a powerful message on the indispensable roles of the judiciary and the media in safeguarding the nation's democracy. Their remarks, particularly poignant as Nigeria looks towards the 2027 general elections, underscored a shared responsibility to uphold public trust and ensure the integrity of democratic processes.

Accurate, responsible, and contextual reporting is indispensable to sustaining public confidence in the administration of justice.

The Chief Justice, represented by Babatunde Adejumo, highlighted that the judiciary, as the guardian of constitutional order, relies heavily on the media to effectively communicate its decisions and maintain public confidence. She cautioned that while the judiciary strives for fairness and transparency, the impact of its judgments is diminished by inaccurate or sensational reporting. This is a sentiment deeply felt within Nigeria, where media narratives can significantly shape public perception of justice, especially during politically charged periods.

Even the most carefully reasoned judgment achieves its full democratic purpose only when it is clearly understood by the society it serves.

Both officials warned against the dangers of misrepresentation and sensationalism, particularly in the context of upcoming elections. The Attorney General echoed these concerns, noting that conflicting court orders, as seen in recent political party disputes, pose a significant threat to the rule of law and public faith in the justice system. The Nigerian media, therefore, faces the critical task of reporting with diligence and balance, ensuring that the complexities of the legal system and electoral processes are conveyed accurately to the public, thereby strengthening, not undermining, democratic institutions.
