June weddings reach highest level in at least 20 years in Denmark

Denmark experienced a significant boom in weddings during June, with 5,161 ceremonies taking place. This figure marks the highest number of marriages recorded for the month of June since statistics became available in 2007, according to Danmarks Statistik.

There have certainly been wedding bells ringing this year, with the number of weddings hitting the highest level since 2008.

The high number of weddings was partly driven by the unique date 26-06-26, which proved particularly popular for couples. Civil service offices in major Danish municipalities reported being exceptionally busy. In Aarhus, the sheer volume of couples led the church to offer spontaneous "drop-in" weddings, as reported by TV2 Østjylland.

A large proportion of married couples in this country unfortunately end up going their separate ways. For many, this is a sad situation in itself, but furthermore, the marriage can also end up having an unhappy ending financially.

Looking at the first half of the year, a total of 14,974 couples tied the knot. Pensions company Sampension noted that this figure is the highest for the first six months of a year since 2008. Historically, August is the busiest month for weddings in Denmark. In contrast to the rise in marriages, the number of divorces in the first six months of the year saw a decrease, with 6,444 divorces compared to 7,781 in the same period last year. Sampension also highlighted that the divorce rate in Denmark was 45% last year, with financial implications often disproportionately affecting women due to lower pension savings.

This is especially true for women, as pension savings are generally not shared in case of divorce. Instead, the parties take their respective pension savings with them, and this typically affects women more, as their savings are generally smaller than men's. And as if that were not enough, women's savings also have to last longer, as they generally retire earlier and live longer than men.
