JUST IN: NANS elects Ondo varsity student as new president

Akinteye Babatunde, a student from Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology, has emerged as the new national president of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS). His election followed the successful conclusion of the association's 2026 national convention, held at the Old Parade Ground in Abuja.

The leadership of NANS has conducted our election successfully and the new leadership has emerged. I thank all the delegates for electing me, a student of OAUSTECH, as the new president of NANS.

Babatunde, who previously served as NANS Senate President, secured victory in a closely contested election against five presidential candidates. He officially takes over from the outgoing NANS President, Olushola Oladoja, who completed his tenure. The convention was noted for its peaceful conduct, with participants describing it as one of the most tranquil in the association's history, owing to the presence of police officers and Department of State Services operatives.

Speaking after his emergence, the newly elected NANS President expressed his gratitude to the delegates. He pledged to uphold the achievements of the outgoing administration and foster unity among Nigerian students. "The leadership of NANS has conducted our election successfully and the new leadership has emerged. I thank all the delegates for electing me, a student of OAUSTECH, as the new president of NANS," Babatunde stated.

In the history of NANS, this is one of the best conventions we have witnessed. There was no crisis, no gunshot, no fight. All the contestants against me have congratulated me already. This shows that NANS is united, and we will continue to work together to keep the association as one.

He further commended the convention's peaceful atmosphere, highlighting the absence of crises, violence, or disputes. "In the history of NANS, this is one of the best conventions we have witnessed. This shows that NANS is united, and we will continue to work together to keep the association as one," he added. Babatunde assured Nigerian students that his administration would continue the previous leadership's positive work and reposition NANS for greater impact on campuses nationwide.

Outgoing President Olushola Oladoja described the election's successful conduct as a highlight of his tenure. "I thank God Almighty for giving me the opportunity to conduct a free and fair election in the history of NANS. I am happy that the person who emerged is someone I strongly believe in and trust in terms of capacity," Oladoja remarked, expressing confidence in Babatunde's ability to surpass his achievements.
