'Justice cannot be a space for private appropriation of public assets,' says Corregidor

As his term as Brazil's National Justice Corregidor draws to a close, Minister Mauro Campbell Marques has strongly advocated for the judiciary to be free from nepotism and "family privileges." Campbell, who will assume the vice-presidency of the Superior Court of Justice next Wednesday, identified the fight against nepotism as a primary challenge during his two-year tenure.

Speaking at the XXI Meeting of the Council of Presidents of State and Military Courts in the historic Teatro Amazonas, Campbell declared, "Justice cannot be a space for family privileges." He stressed that his inspections and correctional actions aimed to reaffirm that the judiciary should not serve as a platform for personal favoritism or any disguised form of private appropriation of public resources.

Campbell, who will be succeeded by Minister Benedito Gonçalves, emphasized that combating nepotism is not about persecuting individuals but about protecting institutions. "In the Judiciary, merit must prevail over kinship, and public interest must prevail over any personal bond," he asserted. He acknowledged that the issues he addressed were often sensitive and had significant financial and institutional impacts.

During his term, Campbell found a willingness among court presidents to engage in frank discussions, acknowledge practices needing revision, and collaborate on solutions. While acknowledging that disagreements were natural, he noted they were handled with respect, cooperation, and responsibility, calling this a valuable asset for the Judiciary to preserve. Campbell also committed to treating Brazil's approximately 18,200 magistrates equally, recognizing regional differences while ensuring equivalent situations received equivalent institutional treatment.
