Justice Orders Mother and Couple Jailed for Child Trafficking Attempt to Chile

Bolivian authorities have ordered the pre-trial detention of a mother and a couple accused of human trafficking, involving a 4-year-old girl who was nearly taken to Chile. The mother was apprehended at the Bimodal Terminal in Santa Cruz while attempting to travel to La Paz with her three other children.

According to the Prosecutor's Office and the Special Force to Combat Crime (Felcc), the mother faces 90 days in prison in Palmasola jail after being charged with human trafficking for illegal adoption or custody. Meanwhile, in La Paz, the couple detained with the 4-year-old girl has been sent to San Pedro prison for 180 days on the same charges.

Fiscal Mijael Cavero explained that an anonymous tip alerted authorities to a mother with three children attempting to travel. Upon investigation at the terminal, officials identified the woman and her three children, aged 10, 6, and 3. A psychological evaluation of the children revealed they had a younger sister whom they missed.

This information prompted communication with La Paz, leading to the identification and arrest of the couple holding the 4-year-old girl. Reports suggest the mother may have arranged a transaction of 1,000 Bolivianos (approximately $145 USD) to send the child to Chile, but the plan was ultimately frustrated. The girl has since been reunited with her maternal uncle, who will ensure her safety and well-being within the family structure.
