Kaduna NDC has no governorship candidate for 2027 yet, chairman confirms

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in Kaduna State currently lacks a definitive governorship candidate for the 2027 election, despite competing claims from prominent party figures. State chairman Evangelist Mordecai Ibrahim stated that the controversy surrounding the party's ticket remains unresolved and that a substitution primary will be necessary to select a valid candidate.

The bitter truth is that both at the state and national levels, the decision as to who is the governorship candidate of Kaduna State, whether Barrister Mohammed Sani Abbas or Senator Danjuma Tellah La’ah, has not been taken.

Ibrahim revealed that he was the party's recognized candidate until his voluntary withdrawal from the race. He formally notified the NDC National Chairman and the Kaduna State Resident Electoral Commissioner of his decision on August 7, submitting a withdrawal letter and an affidavit. He also presented documentation, including an INEC summary listing his name as the NDC governorship candidate, to support his claims.

The situation has led to a dispute between former Senator Danjuma La’ah and lawyer Mohammed Abbas, both of whom are asserting claims to the party's nomination. A faction within the party has denied issuing a governorship ticket to La’ah, and the NDC Deputy National Chairman, North, Alhaji Sidi Bomi, reportedly dismissed a circulating document bearing La’ah's name as unofficial.

Abbas has maintained his legitimacy as the candidate, but Ibrahim rejected this assertion, accusing Abbas of falsely claiming to have participated in and won a primary election. "It is highly unfortunate for a member of the temple of justice to spew such lies that he participated in a primary election which he won, knowing same to be outright falsehood," Ibrahim stated. He stressed that the party cannot resolve the dispute through propaganda and must adhere to the appropriate internal electoral process as stipulated by Section 31 of the Electoral Act 2026.
