Kaduna university unions demand implementation of 2026 agreement

Three unions at Kaduna State University have demanded immediate implementation of a 2026 Federal Government agreement with non-teaching staff at public universities.

The Joint Action Committee of SSANU, NASU and NAAT also called on the Kaduna State Government to pay outstanding earned allowances, promotion arrears, pension arrears, wage awards and the 25% and 35% salary increases applicable to university workers. The committee issued the demands in a communiqué after a meeting at the union secretariat in Kaduna.

The unions said honoring agreements with recognized university unions was necessary to preserve industrial peace and prevent further disputes. Their list of outstanding welfare issues included excess workload allowances, group life insurance for university staff, pension arrears and unpaid salary-related benefits.

The committee said the demands came amid growing tension at Kaduna State University and an ongoing dispute between another university union and the Kaduna State Government. That dispute has raised concern among other unions about a possible escalation that could disrupt academic and administrative work.

SSANU, NASU and NAAT urged the government and the unions involved in the dispute to return to negotiations and honor agreements already reached. They warned that failure to resolve the issues could undermine industrial harmony and affect students, parents and workers.
