KAI Transports 21.56 Million Tons of Coal by May 2026, Supporting National Energy Supply Chain

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) has moved 21.56 million tons of coal from January to May 2026, reinforcing the railway's vital role in the national logistics chain and sustainable energy distribution. The company reported that in May 2026 alone, 4.93 million tons of coal were transported, demonstrating the significant demand for this commodity via rail.

Anne Purba, KAI's Vice President of Corporate Communication, stated that coal transport is a key service contributing to national supply chain stability. "Coal transport is one of KAI's strategic services in supporting the distribution of commodities in large volumes. We continue to maintain operational reliability so that deliveries can proceed according to customer needs," she said.

The majority of KAI's coal transport services operate in South Sumatra, a major coal-producing region. The rail network connects industrial areas and ports, enabling more orderly and efficient distribution. KAI's capacity for continuous, large-volume transport makes it integral to the national logistics system.

Purba added that the growth in national logistics demands transportation modes with high capacity, reliability, and efficiency. KAI is strengthening its freight services to bolster the national logistics sector. "The advantage of rail transport lies in its capacity and service consistency. KAI will continue to develop freight transport services to meet evolving distribution needs," she stated.
